Selectivity

Mini-networks within larger blogs and political campaigns most certainly overhype material to the point that I am turned off (this group being one of few exceptions).

I have made efforts over the past month to cut way back on commenting, recommending, and/or posting, which has in turn given me more time to read, think, and digest information.

I have taken steps to cut back on email as well, unsubscribing from lists and routing other messages into a catch-all folder that I won't open.

New voices and fresh perspectives are getting drowned out because so-and-so can send out an email to a small group and say "rec my new Daily Kos diary", post a link, and -- voila -- the system has been gamed.

That same system works on a site like Buzzflash.net; really, if you have a group of 10 or 20 friends, you can effectively double or triple a small site's traffic using Buzzflash's platform. Once people figure that out, though, that they have fallen prey to freeping of social media sites, the influence of those sites will fade away.

I'd like to see algorithms that make it harder -- much harder -- to get a diary recommended, or to have a story "buzzed" or dugg, etc.

I'd like people to stop making a practice of using email networks to hype most each and every diary or blog post they think is worthy of recommendation.

Please, those of you reading this, make a point of being much more selective in who you trust and what you freep. There's a fine line between networks of communication and groupthink. Personally, I think that line has been crossed and trampled to the point that it needs to be redrawn. Once it is redrawn, in order for such a system to be effective, it needs to be treated with more respect and approached with greater selectivity.
We're getting this process started now - we had a great conference call with Kentucky bloggers about our efforts in the governor's race there, and we posted a diary about it on Bluegrassroots.

I'm hoping this is a model of the things we can do all over the country. I appreciate your comment!

Union bloggers

We have access to a lot of information about unions on the web, but I think having union people get involved with blog communities would be good. At Left in Alabama, we have a user who clearly has a union background and he has been very helpful. Workers at the Honda plant in Alabama are talking with the UAW about organizing. There have been some discussions about what this would mean (the plant will close, etc.) and this guy has all the facts and figures and has really kept the discussions reality based.

Why is Louisiana not part of the South?

The way I see it, any of the states that fought as part of the Confederacy ought to be considered Southern states.

And, by God, Louisiana was one of 'em.

When the political blogosphere becomes dominated by paid political consultants, what will keep voters from tuning out blogs just as they tune out any other campaign ad and literature?
Just remind them that our Constitution establishes taxation with representation. We have the right to call upon Congress to invest our resources into solving community problems. The vast majority of voters, in both parties, support directing their government to get kids covered. Congress is merely responding to the public will, and will only be thwarted by Bush's veto pen and the conservative minority that may sustain his veto.

That's the question usually right before someone calls you a socialist.
